Windows 98 PC Unable to access the Windows Update site?

Folks - my old PC is a Windows 98 installation, with a hard wired network
via a Windows XP machine. Printers are shared OK as are files and folders
and the web works fine, except that some web pages just will not load. Most
Microsoft sites won't load on the 98 PC except for Office Update which works
fine. E-Bay also won't load.

I have put Microsoft.com in the trusted sites and it states on the bottom of
the screen that the site is trusted with a green tick but it still won't
load.

Any ideas why Microsoft update / e-bay won't load? This also affects other
sites and it is always the same sites that either will or won't load. I've
cleared my temporary internet files and all other temp files.

They both load fine on the XP machine so I'm guessing it's not my Zone Alarm
firewall which I disabled to see if that helped but still the pages wouldn't
load.

Any help gratefully received.

Steve

Scanned it for adware/spyware?

The PC tries to load these pages but the send data is faster than the
receive and the throughput is just so slow that it times out with the 404
page.
Just tried a Broadband speed check on the 98 PC and that comes out fine at
798 kilobits per second. So its not the line, points to a setting on my PC.

As some of these pages are secure sites could it be something with this?
