windows 98 update problem after a bunch of trojans.

I removed about 8 trojans and a whole lotta spyware from a 98 second edition
machine. the problem now is windows update will not work, I get the "The
Windows Update software did not update successfully" screen and nothing seems
to help. the IE settings are set to low, and all pertaining certs seem to be
correct (dates and such). so now i am at a loss any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Windows Update stops at the "Checking for the latest version of
the Windows Update software" screen
