Windows 98 update

I trying to update my windows 98 so I can install windows xp home. I select
all the updates that are suggested but it says that windows was unable to
download updates. What can I do.

You should not need to install any updates prior to upgrading to Windows XP.

It says that my Windows 98 should be fully updated before I can install XP.

Still should not be necessary.
But if you already haven't, you should run Upgrade Advisor on the Windows XP
CD.
Uninstall, not just disable, disconnect everything Upgrade Advisor has
issues regardless if it is compatible with Windows XP or not.
Also uninstall and anti virus, anti spyware programs etc.
