Hello- My question is there a easy way to determine what updates to install.
I am giving an older computer to daughter for college running 98 and IE6 I
went to the windows update page and it listed 26 critical and 48 windows 98
updates. The computer hasn't been used since 2001. Do I download all the
critical updates? the most recent ones? any of them? All we are looking for
is to ensure that the computer runs fine. She will be using office and
internet for most of the time. I don;t know much about comtuers and could
use a little advice Thanks

Several suggestions...
For the old W98 computer... Yes, download all the critical
updates, start with the latest cumulative update since it
will include many if not all the previous ones listed. Then
reboot and scan again at Windows Update. You need to have
all critical updates installed when you're done.

Your daughter will be better served by a new Dell (an
example) that has XP and a current version of OFFICE (not
included in the price and can be bought at most college
bookstores very cheaply). The new computer will run much
faster, have more hard disk storage space, will support high
speed USB, which is important for using flash memory,
cameras, etc. Later versions of OFFICE use an Office Update
which is automatic, in the same way as Windows Update. A
new computer has a warranty. It will also have lots more
RAM and a CD-RW maybe even a DVD-RW drive.

If the computer has not been used for four years, the hard
drive will probably fail within a short time since the
bearings have not been turning and the lubrication needs to
be used to operate properly. You will also have problems
(she will) with fans and such.

Buy her a new computer and several flash memory cards so she
can back-up her data. Teachers don't care if the dog ate
the work or the computer crashed, they want the work on
time.

A 256 MB or bigger thumb-drive (or a flash card reader and
several cards) are very handy to have at college, you can
copy research at the library and take it home. A $10
Compact Flash card is equal to 100 floppies and is the size
of a paper matchbook.
