Windows 98 on VPC2004

Hi

I recently installed VPC2004 onto my TabletPC (Tecra M4) so I can run
Windows 98 on it (and thus, run a load of apps that don't run on Windows XP
Tablet PC Edition 2005).

Thing is, after installing Windows 98 (First-Edition) from my "Windows 98
Upgrade" CD I ran into driver problems (namely, the network driver, even
after installing the VPC 'Additions'). And even with the soundcard driver
installed all sound is choppy and somewhat distorted, even simple WAVs.

Have I done anything wrong at all, after all, Windows 98-on-VPC is supported
by Microsoft.

Win98 should default to installing the correct driver for the VM, but if
it's not, you have to select "PCI Fast Ethernet DEC 21140 Based adapter",
that's what Virtual PC emulates.

As for sound it's probably a performance issue.

I restarted my installation of Windows 98, previously I was doing a
botched-job due to my partially-hacked bootable Windows 98 CD, but now I'm
using my original medium (because I didn't realise VPC could use bootable
floppy images until afterwards).

But I've now got Windows 98 fully installed and I'm just patching it now,
ironic at how the "Download IE6" page doesn't render at all in IE4 (I had to
sneak around a bit to download the installer).

Sound performance has improved, but it still stutters a bit, performance
also takes a hit whenever I use my tablet's pen, which is a bit odd.

Do you have any other recommendations?

One last thing, how does Windows Server 2003 perform under VirtualPC 2004?
I'm wanting to install Visual Studio onto my TabletPC but without the burden
of also installing IIS, so I thought to install WS2003 into a virtualised
server environment and access IIS via the loopback adapter, this would work,
right?

Thanks

Yep, that's a very common problem.

How much RAM do you have on the host and how much RAM are you dedicating to
the VM?

It should, I have run that configuration, but it all kind of depends on your
tablet performance-wise. But really you're going to effect the hosts
performance more by this than just installing IIS on the host. When I use
IIS on the guest, that's also where I'm doing the development too, so it's a
natural fit.

Hence why I download Firefox before IE6

512MB on the laptop with 64MB dedicated to my Windows 98 image, that was
what was recommended by the VirtualPC image. I ran a 64MB Windows 98 image
using VMWare (but on my desktop) a while ago and the performance was
excellent (but I stopped using it after a while because the emulated
hardware wasn't compatible with the games I wanted to run).

Well I usually develop for IIS6 and not IIS5 plus I'm keen to do a bit of
Windows Media Services development as well, and since you can't run WMS on
Windows XP then I'll have to go with installing WS2003 in a virtualised
environment, but thanks for letting me know it works.

More RAM on the host is the only thing I can see. You probably would want
to run W2003 as a guest with more RAM than you're going to have available
and it'll help your Win98 performance too.

I read up about QEmu, it sounds good so far, but the documentation doesn't
mention soundcard emulation at all, how well does it do that? (As well as
networking)

Thanks
