My wife recieved a prompt that there where windows updates waiting for her
win98SE pc, so she downloaded the updates.
The pc now refuses to boot up !
IT appears to load windows, but just as it begins to load the desktop it
repeatedly crashes with the error:

A fatal exception 06 has occurred at 0000:0000001B. The current application
will be terminated.

The only option is to reboot but the same thing happens again.

Good job I have my xp machine to try and ask around for help !
Can anybody offer any advice regards a fix please ?

I use Windows 98 and was also prompted to download an update. Ever since I
did that, I can't access the web. Every time I try to load either Microsoft
Explorer or Mozilla, the computer gives me the following error:

Fatal Exception 06 has occurred EB00:0000021E

followed by a series of other errors such as:

Kernel32.dll at 01`7f:bff72843

Every time I press the space bar, it comes up with yet another error then it
hangs.

How do we let Microsoft know of this? Any ideas?

I also recieved a recent notice that there was a critical update for my
win98SE pc. After the download, my pc would not boot! So, I started the pc in
Safe Mode, went into Control Panel, went to Add/Remove programs, scrolled
down the list of programs until I found "Windows 98 KB891711 Update", and
removed this update. My pc works fine again! There may be other "Windows 98
xxxxxxxx Updates" listed, but it appears as though KB891711 is the culprit!
Good Luck!

The update appears to have put a program into the startup
group - if you check Task Manager (ctrl-alt-del) you will
see kb891711 running as a process.
I have also seen Zone Alarm showing IE as running when it
isn't (I use Mozilla Firefox) - I presume it is reporting
the kb891711.exe in action.

A google on "KB891711" will give you many hits of others
with the same problems. Meanwhile you could remove the
kb891711 from the startup list - Start - Run - msconfig-
startup tab at your own risk of course! One poster on a
forum claims that an MS techie had recommended he do this.

Nellie, Robert,
Wonderful, many thanks for the advice. I managed to break into task manager
and stop the KB891711 task just before the desktop crashed. Then I used
msconfig to remove it from startup. EVerything fine now, appears all back to
normal. I shall remove KB891711 permanently and let Microsoft know what I
think of their "updates".

Thanks a million for the help )
