I have Windows 98SE and I was having the exact same problem and then I went
to this website and followed the instructions step by step and now I am able
to run windows update and install the updates. I hope this helps.

There are 16 steps to the solution. Even though the actual error number is
not listed on here this works for error 0x80090305.
