My Dell computer just stopped working and gave me a Windows Activation Error.
When I enter the product key that was on the back of the computer it says
"invalid product key; license evaluation failed". It is still under warranty
and has worked fine for past 3-months.

Please help

The hardware is Dell, the software is Dell OEM and you have a warranty, and
access to Dell technical support.
Call Dell, describe the problem and have them put it right for you.

It is Microsoft's lame attempt at controlling piracy that
caused the problem. Microsoft/Vista/WGA/SPP is to blame.

Thanks; I have been in touch w/Dell. There solution is to reload Vista. I
would like to avoid that if at all possible. I have tried to back up all
that I can but am afraid I may have missed something.

Call the Microsoft activation number which will be
given to you via the activation wizard. Give them
the installation ID number that will be displayed
on your screen, and they will give you a confirmation
ID to type in.

Talk to Microsoft...

The wga and activation check will kick in on all Vista
non-commercial installations every 3 months, maybe forever?

In your case I don't see why you have to re-install an
OS that very likely will do the same thing in another
3 months... If you do re-install..then set your clock
ahead by 3 months and a day or two and see if it pops
up another license failure.

I am not sure what happens to folks who don't use/go online..
but the prospect of phoning MS every 3 months is not going
to make people happy.

Please reset your activation information as follows:

You can get started with phone activation by typing "slui.exe 4"
(w/o the quotes) in the Start Search box in the Start Menu and pressing
Enter.
The phone activation process takes about 6 minutes.

Only if you use Vista do you have to deal with it. With Ubuntu, there is
no such crap installed.
