I am running Vista Home Premium and for whatever reason I cannot get the
automatic updates to work. When I open the windows update window it opens
but show a completely blank page with a crossed red sheild and a blank button.

Why is this happening and how do I fix it?

thanks

Are you using Microsoft Internet Explorer when you visit
the Windows Update web site? If not, then you need to.

It doesn't seem to matter either way. However I try to get updates I end up
at the same window. My dad said it happens if the software isn't genuine,
but this software came pre-installed with my laptop.

You receive a scripting error or a blank page when you visit the Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft
Update Web site:

What does IE have to do with "stand alone" Vista Windows Updates?

The links are for versions "older" than Vista.
