Windows Automatic Update keeps notifying & failing to install Upda

I am being pestered by Windows Update to install VIA Technologies Inc. -
Networking - VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter [size 65 KB] although,
according to the Microsoft Updates Installation History window I have already
successfully downloaded and installed it! I do not think I actually need
this update anyway as I am not networked. My system is Windows XP Home
Edition + SP2.

In order to stop this highly irritating sequence of events, I have had to
resort to manually switching off Automatic Updates (I tried the option of it
asking me before downloading and installing any updates, but this did not
seem to work even after a restart), but I would like to be able to use
Automatic Updates again.

Is there anyway of deleting this particular update to stop it continually
downloading and then failing to install? Will it stop me from downloading
and installing any further Automatic Updates?

"Idiot speak" answers appreciated please.

I'm having the same problem with the malware removal tool. Every minute it
reappears and asks me to install the update. I do so and then it loops
repeatedly.

Any ideas on how to tell the update engine that this update has been
installed so it stops flashing?

Thanks,
Chris

Since yesterday I'm having the same problem with an update of Nvidia
Corporation - Video - NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200. Although it is already
installed, Automatic Update wants to install it again but it fails every time.
