I am running windows XP and my automatic update keeps turning off, and will
not allow me to update anything from windows. AVG 8.5 says everything is
clean, but any downloads from microsoft just stop, sometimes before they even
start.

Hello Joel,

No one program never catches & removes everything because there are
millions of possible infections.

Run both programs. (MBAM) and (SAS)
-=-

Some very good antimalware applications are SUPERAntiSpyware and
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

SUPERAntiSpyware (SAS)
There is a free version (on demand only scan), the version
Paid includes active surveillance, similar to Windows Defender:
<http://www.superantispyware.com/>
-=-
MalwareBytes Anti-Malware (MBAM) Same as above.
<http://www.malwarebytes.com/>
-=-

I hope this post is helpful.

Let us know how it works ºut.

Good luck
-=-

There is a very good chance are that you are seeing the affects of a
hijackware infection.

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

NB: Rename MRT.EXE to, e.g., SCANNER.EXE before running the tool!

2. Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan (only!) in Safe
Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested
logs in an appropriate forum, not here.

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

I too am having problems but I noticed it was 3 updates for the last week or
week and a half it tries to update the same ones each day and when I tell it
do download instead of waiting untill I turn off pc it happens more than once
per day. I too have XP pro and . My wife's pc does load the updates. I'm
confused.
