Bought a HP PC just over a year ago now 1 month before VISTA was released and
was offered a free upgrade disc to vista when i bought it. I had to send
away for it, well it is only now iv'e braved installing it.

The problem is since the upgrade with Home Premium edition, everytime i
start up my pc the windows boot manager pops up at the start asking to boot
normally or choose a previous edition of windows. How do i stop it from
coming up? im worried someone will accidentally press the wrong thing at the
start.

Question - Do you still want to be able to boot into XP, or would yo
prefer to remain with Vista

- If you no longer want XP, I'd suggest then that you boot into th
XP install, backup to DVD all pertinent data, and then re-instal
Vista completely, this time formatting the drive
- If you don't want to format, then perhaps you can use the BCDEdi
tool to just remove the XP option entirely. This will afford you th
opportunity to boot into Vista only while still providing access t
the data file that existed for the XP install
- If you still want to keep XP, then perhaps you can simply chang
the default timeout for the default OS from 30 seconds to somethin
shorter, like 5 seconds, giving less time for someone to pick th
wrong one (XP). I can't give any details now on how to do this i
Vista, for reasons that are made clear in my signature

You need to edit the BOOT.INI file.

Copy c:\boot.ini to boot.in_ (this will give you a recovery point -- you can
copy boot.in_ to boot.ini and restore the original operation).

Then go into the boot.ini file and edit so that Vista is the default OS. You
can do this from within the System dialog too, but I don't think tht method
gives a back up.

If there is no boot.ini file, Vista should still boot and make a new one.
You could simply rename boot.ini to boot.in_ and restart. I think the first
restart will give an error, but subsequent restarts should be clean.

Vista no longer uses BOOT.INI

Terra-Hawk needs to use BCDEdit to make changes to the boot
configuration. BOOT.INI exists only in multi-boot configurations where
older OSes (like Windows XP or Windows 2000) require their use. If Vista
is the only OS, then BOOT.INI does not exist, and will not be re-created
with any number of reboots.

I had to follow an instruction CD especially from HP so it would install
properly, i chose the Upgrade to vista option rather than start from scratch
because there wasnt an option to remove the old windows. The disc said to
upgrade so i was woried to even attpemt to remoe the old windows, plus there
wasnt an option anyway. There is nothing i want to save on my Hard Drive as
a power surge yesterday afternoon wiped it so i decided this was the time to
try vista. How do i remove the xp option entirely?

what would you suggest i do? a complete reformat?

thanks.

Sorry to hear about your hard drive - I lost my entire computer, and am
currently working on a machine loaned to me by my ISP.

The upgrade option is only available if you originally booted into XP,
and then started the Vista installer from within XP.

If you want start from scratch and only install Vista, then a full
format of the target drive to which you are installing is the best
method. You should boot from the DVD (you may ned to enter into you PC
BIOS and change the boot order so that your DVD drive is first), and
when you get to the stage when setup asks to which drive you want to
install, you should see the options to also format the drive.

Download and install either EasyBCD or VistaBootPro (both are free to
download - Google) Once installed you can easily follow the instructions to
clean up the Boot process to remove the unwanted entry

BOOT.INI is in the root directory. C:\BOOT.INI
