Since my first update on 3/27/2008 on this new computer, I'm not able to get
updates anymore (Windows cannot search for updates - error 8008005).
I also get continuosly messages "Windows Modules Installer stopped working
and was closed", problem that need to be fixed with update that I can't get
to work.

System: Vista Home Premium 32-bit
HELP!

Details? First of all the code is probably incomplete.
Most error codes are 8 hex digits. So with 7 you're missing a 0 somewhere
and that will affect the success of any searching you do.
Also, you should try searching for the proper code (whatever it is)
again with a 0x prefix. That is the prefix which indicates that it
is a string of hex numbers and not a decimal number.

The error code is correct, i understand what you are saying but i can only
know what the computer tells me and that is:

When i try and open windows defender or start my computer up i get a message
that say's "This application has failed to start because of WINHTTP.dll was
not found". and the user interface has stopped working correctlly.

The a second box appears saying "Windows SQM Consolidator stopped and was
closed"

This is all very confusing to me and is stopping any updates coming to my
computer. I seriously have no idea what any of it means or how to fix it.

Here is some more information on this problem - which is something I'm
experiencing as well.

Please go to http://home.comcast.net/~palmer-jr/ and click on photos.

1) Photo 1 shows the screen where the error message occurs. It is created
when you try to run Windows Update. It say, "Windows could not search for
new updates." Note that the code that is listed is 80080005, not 8008005 as
included in the subject of this thread.

2) When you press "Get Help," screen 2 appears.

3) When you press "Troubleshoot problems with installing updates," screen 3
appears.

4) When you press "I tried to install updates but one or more didn't get
installed" screen 4 appears. That screen instructs you to click to opent
Windows Update, which results in screen 1. Screen 4 says "If an error has
occurred, it will be displayed with an error code that you can use to search
online for help" - which is what people are trying to do here.

Thank you for confirming that guess. Unfortunately 0x80080005
is probably just a generic "something's broken" type of error indicator.
So you really need to find its context in the diagnostics that the procedure
is producing. If there are no useful clues in WindowsUpdate.log,
even with its verbose logging enabled (ref. KB902093), you may have
to resort to ProcMon tracing it, to supplement whatever is being produced.

Ok. Let's try a search.

http://update.microsoft.com/microsof...n=en&IsMu=True

(Live Search for
0x80080005 update site:microsoft.com
)

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910337

(Ibid. Ignore the title.)

That last hit gives the idea that the BITS service could be involved.
In that case you could try using (in an authorized cmd window):

bitsadmin /util /version /verbose

to see if that gives you any more clues.

On the off chance that the wuauserv service is the problem area
you can search this newsgroup for other tips from MVP posters ; )
about that.

Etc.

Good luck

Robert

You may receive an error message that contains the "0x8DDD0018" code or the "0x80246008"
code when you try to download updates from the Microsoft Windows Update Web site or from
the Microsoft Update Web site
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910337
Windows could not start the Background Intelligent Transfer service on the local computer.
For more information, review the system event log. If this is a non-Microsoft service,
contact the service vendor and refer to service-specific error code -2147467243.
