Error Code 80070057 "windows cannot search for updates" iks received any
time that I try and update Vista Home Premium. I have raised this subject
on this forum before and the advice was to contact Microsoft via email or
phone. I have done both. By email they replied that they could not solve
the problem and further requests have not received a reply. By phone they
tell me I am out of warranty and need to pay £46. Grateful for a solution.
Will reinstalling vista cure it for example?

Tip: Temporarily disable real-time protection by your anti-virus and/or
anti-spyware applications (e.g., CounterSpy, Spysweeper, Spybot, AVG
Anti-Spyware) and/or any third-party firewall (e.g., ZA) before attempting
to install the update(s).

If you disable a third-party firewall, do NOT connect to the internet
without having the Windows Firewall enabled!
=====================

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

Support for Windows Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related
to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KBnnnnnn).

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through
your usual support contacts.

Sadly that solution does not work. Will reinstalling Vista help?
If I could identify the security updates that are missing it may help may
case for free support, but as windows 'cannot search' I'm no further
forward.

Even though you may not be able to identify the update(s) that caused your
problem, open a free support incident anyway. Judging from posts to the
public newsgroups, a very large number of Vista users are having the same
problem. MS won't do anything about it without having a "body count" and
they won't have a "body count" if no one opens a support incident.

In such cases, the squeaky wheel /does/ get the grease. <wink>

Well I have followed your advice and the stars at MS Support have developed
a new system of dealing with requests. They generate the auto response
promising a technician will reply within one working day and then nothing.
After about a week an email arrives suggesting that obviously I am too busy
or absent on a trip and therefore they are transferring my request to the
inactive pile. I reply telling them this is rubbish but it is never
acknowledged. No messages from MS are blocked by my system, they just want
me to shell out £46 for live tech support. Anyone else experienced this?

Time to try some diagnosis?

<cmd_output OS="XPsp2">

F:\>set /a c = 0x57
87
F:\>net helpmsg %c%

The parameter is incorrect.
</cmd_output>

Isn't that helpful? ; }

As usual error codes are meaningless without their context.
Find where in the log that code in any of its representations is found.
Then look before that. Activate verbose logging if necessary.
Supplement the logging with ProcMon tracing if necessary.

Good luck
