Windows can't check for updates

I've got Vista Home Premium version 6.0 (Build 6001 Service Pack 1) and running 32bit version.

I've been trying the windows update for days now and it says its checking but nothing happens and I get a notification saying that windows can't check for updates.

I've tried many scans including Malwarebytes and found nothing wrong. I ran a full CHKDSK and defragmentation. Still no change, no problems found. I tried to run the system file checker (as administrator) but got "could not start the repair service". Checked the services.msc, Windows Modules Installer to Manual but still couldn't run the checker.

No clue what to do next, please help!

Now receiving error code 80080005. Tried to do the Startup Repair but kept getting a message about "if you have recently attached a device to this computer such as a camera or portable music player, remove it and restart your computer" No change, still getting the 80080005.
