Windows Components Wizard

If I perform the following steps:
1. Install the OS.
2. Apply all updates using Windows Update.
3. Use the Windows Components Wizard to add a component (say IIS).

Do I need to reinstall all of the appropriate updates such as service packs
in order for IIS to be updated (and especially secure!)? Or is Windows
Update smart enough to recognize that IIS was installed AFTER service packs,
security updates, etc and tell me if I need to reapply them? If not, how do
I even know what I need to reapply?

The short answer:
No for service packs but yes for hotfixes (at least the ones after the last
service pack that apply).
