| After installing Win XP SP2 and other updates, windows freezes when I try to
| run IE6 (also happens with IE7), or Security updates (from control panel).
| Sometimes it will just stay frozen until I manually reboot, and sometimes it
| will reboot itself after about 15 seconds. The computer is a PIII 500MHZ.
| I have sucessfully installed SP2 and all current updates on a newer computer
| with no probs.
| Anybody have any advice or solutions?

| Thanks
How much RAM do you have? I've seen XP run on 384 MB of RAM with a 16 MB
videocard (PIII 733 Mhz), but the dial-up connection sucks..free Netzero with
ads. I suppose IE 7 devours so much more RAM than IE 6, that RAM may be an issue
in IE 7 where it wasn't in IE 6.
I also have a pet theory that if you turn OFF Automatic Update Notification to
the Windows site, svchost (Control-Alt-Delete to see programs running) won't go
bonkers and lock up your machine.
If you have Symantec AV Corporate, that could be running a background task that
makes the machine unusable too. Try a different startup scan setting, or a
different AV program.
