I have WindowsDefender on my Vista Home Premium PC and it wont work anymore.
It fails to initiate. How is it fixed or uninstalled? Is it also called
"Windows Live OneCare Scan" in Programs and Features? I can't find any way
to uninstall it.

Hi,

You can't uninstall Windows Defender, it's integrated into the operating
system. It is not the same thing as Windows Live OneCare. If it's not able
to initiate then either a) you have some other antimalware installed which
is blocking it or b) you have some malware installed on the system that is
blocking it. The answer is more likely (a) since that is what Windows Live
Onecare does.

Should I uninstall Oncecare? No one remembers downloading it, or does it
take the place of WindowsDefender? Which is the better one to have?

OK, it's disabled and WDefender is running but how is it updated? There's no
update button in WindowsDefender.

windows defender gets updated through the windows update service.
would have recommended keeping onecare. at least until it expired (
dont know if you subscribed or downloaded the demo). onecare does a lo
more than windows defender

It is updated via Automatic Updates. I have that set to ONLY NOTIFY
me of available updates. It will place the icon in your tray, and you
can then choose to download and install on your own schedule.

There is no predictable update schedule for Defender that I've
noticed. You get them whenever they become available.

My family don't know where it came from. No one knows how it (Onecare) got
on the PC.
