If you don't already have it, it is automatically offered by Windows Update.

Thank you Robin for your reply!!! I am assuming I dont have it because when
attempting to download Windows Defender the download will not complete and I
get an error type message stating that it requires Windows Service Pack 2. I
have been through Windows Automatic Updates several times however this has
not helped. With that information, any new advice??

Please distinguish between "download" and "installation". You say the
download did not complete, but in that case, the update would never run, and
so no error message would appear. If you get an error message about service
pack levels, the download must have completed, and the installation begun.
Did you save the download to disk? If so, right-click on it, select
"Properties", and check the date of the "Digital Signature".

Open control panel "System". It will tell you which version of Windows and
which Windows service pack you have.

First off, "System" says I have Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1. The
download completes however the install does not. This is when it states I
need Windows XP Service Pack 2.

Yes, you need to install XP Service Pack 2. This is a big update with lots
of prerequisites to check out.
See http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/s...hattoknow.mspx
and http://support.microsoft.com/xpsp2getinstall

- update your BIOS to the latest level.
- update your motherboard chipset drivers to the latest level.
- update your video driver to the latest level.
- ensure your PC is free of all malware.
- download and save to disk the full XP Service Pack 2 from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
- disconnect from the internet.
- disable permanently (i.e. not just "until next restart") all third-party
anti-virus, anti-malware, firewalls, download accelerators etc
- use msconfig to disable all other third-party start-up applications,
especially anything like Virtual-CD applications.
- restart Windows to get a clean boot-up.
- run the update to SP2.
- the first restart after applying the Service Pack will take a long time:
do not interrupt it, even if the screen is blank.
- re-enable all disabled applications and anti-malware.
- given the existence of Windows Firewall in SP2, you might be able to
dispense with any third-party firewall.

Good luck!
