Automatic update set to: Notify me but don't automatically download and
install them. It downloads ok.

It failed to installed no error code.

I tried to download it manually.

The window showed:

Initializing Installation
Download
Not Installed

As it keeps being reoffered, I now have it as a hidden update.

I have the same problem as Serge. I did get an error code when I did an
inquiry on the Microsoft update page. It gave me the Error Code: 0x80508007.
My Window defender was also unable to automatically do the install. Seems
like Microsoft is having problems with the update programs I had a problem
about a week ago where is was selecting something that was not supposed to
select for update. Hope someone figures what the heck is causing all the
problems currently.

I agree completely with Woody. Suggest waiting for Microsoft to fix the
problem.

I have reproduced this problem (error 0x80070643). Users may encounter this
problem when updating Defender via Automatic Update, Windows Update, or from
within Defender (Check for updates function).

NB: Defender will NOT be happy and its "Alert!" icon will continue to appear
in Notification Area until an update is successfully installed. This does
NOT mean that Defender is not working/protecting your machine.

I have alerted MS and the Defender team to this apparent bug via private
channels.

This update is failing on all 20 PC's in our environment. It's about time
that MSFT separate the Windows Defender updates from the Windows/Microsoft
updates. This program should update itself independently of other system
updates. I'm tired of seeing the security icon in my system tray just for
this silly, barely useful, program. I've never seen the program be able to
clean any spyware or malware at all. I've always had to utilize other
products to clean malware from a PC as Windows Defender never succeeds at
cleaning anything. It's quickly becoming more of a nuisance than a
must-have tool for protecting PC's.

Same Microsoft Error message here, Defender updates fail to install.
Attempted to install the latest Defender Update definition manually to no
avail... Also attempted the regsvr32 fix (kb943144) without any success this
happened on 3 separate PC's here. Anxiously awaiting a resolution..

Not necessarily: I uninstalled and reinstalled Windows Defender in an
attempt to fix the problem, and it's now stuck at Definition version
1.0.0.0 2006/01/25, so my machine isn't terribly well protected.

I'm frankly stunned that this could get released with such a clear
problem, and that Windows Security Support still doesn't know about it
(as of my call 2 hours ago).

Antispyware definition version: 1.35.716.0
Antispyware definition created on: 2008-24-06 01:58:38 PST

This update will fail regardless of how you try to install it:
* Windows Defender direct update error 0x80070643
* Windows Update error 0x80508007
* Manual update from <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923159/>
runs but does nothing

Problem reproduced by a many people on many machines.

I'm having the same problem. It's been on-going since 6/19. I have about 5
updates that won't install after the download and when I run "update" again
they don't even show up as needed. At least one of them is a so called
'critical update.'

This problem also seems to be affecting Windows Live OneCare Safety
Scanner <http://onecare.live.com/site/en-au/default.htm?mkt=en-au> --
Protection Scan fails with ErrorID 0x04500816, ResultID=0x8007000e.
(Other functions still work properly.)
