Unable to install this update twice, I am left with two "failed" items in my
update history. The version I now have is 1.35.563.0.
Is there anything I should do? Also, is there a way to remove the two
"failed" entries in the update history?

Try again, or update manually via the right-hand menu here:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/

As of this post, defs v1.37.4.0 is available.

Update successfully installed 1.37.1.0.
Update history still shows two failed attempts to install 1.35.716.0. And it
tells me that I am up to date--no new critical updates available.
Here is the note regarding 1.35.716.0:
Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.35.716.0)
Install this update to revise the definition files used to detect spyware
and other potentially unwanted software. Once you have installed this item,
it cannot be removed.
Sounds important. Can it be that 1.37.1.0 "replaced" the previously failed
definition update?

The manual update you suggest wants to install Mpas-fe.exe. The other day,
after two failed attempts to install via Windows Update, I did run this
file. Can I assume that it successfully installed the errant definition
update at that time? Might that explain why I am being told that there are
no new updates available?

MPAS-FE.EXE is the name of every definition update for Defender that's
manually downloaded/installed via the Security Portal
(http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/)... which as of /this/ post is
offering v1.37.23.0. (Don't ask why v1.37.4.0 was offered earlier kos I
dunno!)

If you're currently running a definitions version /lesser/ than v1.37.23.0
(e.g., v1.35.363.0), manually download/install the newer version offered at
the Security Portal.

Yes, there were "issues" with the definitions verion being offered via
Windows Update and the Security Portal on 24 Jun-08. See this post in a
related thread by Diana Smith (MS Security):

Thanks for the link. I infer from Diana's post that a fast track "fix" will
make up for the missing 1.35.716.0. Since I now have a definitions update
with a number greater than the errant one, I'd think I could assume that I
am, in fact, "up to date."

There was an issue with the anti-malware signature package affecting

invalid characters made it into the packages and is causing update failures
for all products running on down-level operating system such as Windows XP.

We are currently fast tracking a fix through our signature certification
system with an estimated release time of 6:00pm today (6/24/2008) with
version greater than or equal to 1.35.740.0.
