windows defender doesn't start

Hi - I am experiencing a strange problem with Windows Defender which has
only started over the last week or two: I have to manually start it after
Windows has loaded whereas before, I'm sure it started automatically with
Windows. Has anyone any ideas what the problem could be? I've tried adding
it to the startup folder but this doesn't work.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
