When I click "check now" button, I see the above message.

Already tried removing sig file:

run - Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}

Also tried uninstalling Defender completely, and re-installing.

I'm running fully patched XP.

I'm not behind any funky firewalls or anything. Old Microsoft
anti-spyware was always able to retrieve updates without issue.

Any other ideas?

thanks.

c

See this KB article which has many suggestions & tips:

How to troubleshoot definition update issues for Windows Defender beta 2:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=918355

Microsoft has established separate newsgroups for Windows Defender Beta2
support and comments. This is not one of them.
