This update is stuck in an endless installation loop. My installation history
shows that it has been installed successfully 9 times! and the shield
continues to come up telling me the update is ready to be installed. What to
do?

Tom,

Try this first. Show hidden files, folders, and system files :
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Navigate to the WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\Install
folder. In there *should* be a file named mpas-f.exe.
Right click, choose Properties.
If the Modified date is Thursday, April 27, 2006, 4:14:28 PM, then right
click it choose Run as ...
Put a mark next to " The following user ..."
For User Name choose the Administrator
Enter the password is one has been created for the Administrator, then
click OK.

If that doesn't resolve the issue, please read this and do the
recommended resolution :

MowGreen,
Thanks for your reply. There is no Install folder under the Download folder
and a disk search showed 2 variations on the file you named below:
MPAS-F.EXE-092F18D1.pf, and SFX_MPAS-F.EXE-0E6FDE60.pf found in
Windows/prefetch. Since the document you led me to doesn't have the same
symtoms as the problem I described is it smarter to deinstall defender and
start over or go through the steps in the document?
Tom

(Many have indeed resolved the same problem simply by
uninstalling/reinstalling Defender, Tom.)

Tom,

Then it's a download issue, not an install issue. The link PABear
provided has as it's first step visiting Microsoft Update. If the system
is using Windows Update, skip step 1 and start with step 2.
If none of the steps resolve the issue, then post the last entry in the
WindowsUpdate.log that shows Definition Update 1.14.14xx.x for BETA
Windows Defender (KB915597) ( the xx's represent the definition update
version ):

2006-05-03 09:03:48 976 45c DnldMgr * Priority = 2, ServiceId =
{9482F4B4-E343-43B6-B170-9A65BC822C77}
2006-05-03 09:03:48 976 45c DnldMgr * Updates to download = 1
2006-05-03 09:03:48 976 45c Agent * Title = Definition Update
1.14.14xx.x for BETA Windows Defender (KB915597)
