windows defender update 7/3/2008

on 7/3, my vista system automatically installed a windows defender
update-KB915597 (definition 1.37.271.0). Also, on 7/1, (definition
1.37.191). Around that time, when I went into a yahoo messenger chat room, I
was unable to see text that was typed in the room. However, I can still hear
voices and music on the mic. I can type and see my messages in the room and
so can other people. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling messenger.
I am not sure of the exact date when I was no longer able to do this..whether
it was july 3 or july 1, but that is the only thing that I can find that may
have caused this. The only other factor is that my 60 day free norton
symantec subscripton expired around the 26th or 28th (don't remember exact
date) and I didn't not renew until july 4, at which time I upgraded to norton
360. But a scan did not reveal anything. Any suggestions or help to solve
this problem? And, no, I do not have ignore anyone not on my messenger list
checked. And I do have windows defender turned off.

Windows version? I don't think your problems have anything to do with the
Defender update or Windows Update.

Try the following:

1. After making certain you have a copy of your Product Key for Norton 360,
uninstall all Norton software (including LiveUpdate) via Add/Remove
Programs.

2. Enable the Windows Firewall.

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g.,
browsing; reading email; chatting) except #3 through #5 below until your
anti-virus application has been installed and fully updated!

3. Run this removal tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05033108162039

4. Reboot and /immediately/ reinstall Norton 360.

5a. Reboot again, then run LiveUpdate manually and repeatedly until you get
a "No more updates available" prompt.

5b. Run a full system scan with Norton AntiVirus.

Do your problems persist now?

I'm not sure this will help. The problem occurred before I downloaded the
Norton 360. And I did uninstall it and tried a restore point back to the
30th and for some reason the restore would not work. Then I redownloaded
norton 360 again. I can try your suggestion, but am not sure if that would
have anything to do with it considering the time frame of when this problem
occurred. I have windows Vista home premium. thanks

You asked for assistance. Feel free to ignore my suggestion.

Norton applications do NOT uninstall cleanly. You MUST run the Norton
Removal Tool after uninstalling the Norton application, any Norton Add-ons,
and LiveUpdate via Add/Remove Programs (Installed Programs in Vista).

I was not ignoring your suggestion. I was just wondering how that would be
the cause of the problem, if the problem occurred before I installed the
Norton 360. If, in light of this information, you still feel it might be
part of the problem, I will indeed try your suggestion. Thank you for your
help.

How could Norton be involved here? Because you'd upgraded from another
(expired & free-trial) version Norton application without cleanly removing
the latter first.

However, the fact that your computer had no anti-virus protection for a week
or more (since the first Norton application wasn't running with updated
definitions) may be in play here, too.
