Installed the recent update, which then kept reappearing. In frustration, I
thought - uninstall it, then reinstall it from WU, and all will be well.
Nope. Windows Update site mow just sits there and does sweet FA - doesn't
even scan.

Well done MS. Fine piece of QA there!

What to do now?

Microsoft has established separate newsgroups for Windows Defender Beta2 support and comments. This is not one of them.

See http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...s/default.mspx

You see, the problem was that they were REPEATEDLY updated (WU problem), and
then when WD uninstalled, WU no longer works. Thanks MS.

I also note that WU does not work - indeed, the whole problem started with
repeats of the same update for Windows Defender (and your assertion that
there was no update is wrong). It is WU that is the problem, not Defender.
See http://tinyurl.com/mjx5a for other references to this. You did not read
my post closely. And despite uninstalling WD, WU no longer works. I don't see
how that is a Defender problem?
