I have windows XP Pro set to automatic updates, however the updates are not
installed. On manual update I get the following error:

403 - Forbidden: Access is denied.
You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the
credentials that you supplied.

Can anyone help ?

What version of Windows XP Professional do you have? SP3?

What updates are you trying to install?

Are you using a third-party firewall?

What antivirus/anti-malware applications are you using?

Is your machine clean of spyware/viruses/trojans/worms and other assorted
malware?

What is the complete address of the web site that is giving you that error?

Is your problem discussed on this web page?

Error 403 "Access Denied/Forbidden"

Are you running WinXP SP2 or SP3?

Is this a sudden, new problem?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

I have this same problem and symptoms. Somehow, my Windows Update is no
longer "registered or installed," and when I try to reinstall, I get the
"403" access denial, at web site
http://www.update.microsoft.com/micr...=en-us&muopt=6.

The problem is discussed at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/245142, but this
is a 2007 posting, and does not address XP SP3. I have NOT tried any of the
things mentioned, since XP is not specifically addressed.

I have XP Professional with SP3, running a current McAfee antivirus/firewall
application. It is a sudden problem, apparently since 11-9-09, because that
is the last time my Windows Defender was able to update. Scans do not flush
out any viruses or malware.

I forgot to mention - when I try to manually update Windows Defender, I get
error code 0x80004002. Might be useful info, might not.

“The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it
has no enabled devices associated with it.” Error 0x80070422

There is a very good chance that you are seeing the effects of a hijackware
infection!

NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had
expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has
since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows
Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall
Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help!

Microsoft PCSafety provides home users (only) with no-charge support in
dealing with malware infections such as viruses, spyware (including unwanted
software), and adware.
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...prid=7552&st=1

Also available via...

Consumer Security Support home page
https://consumersecuritysupport.microsoft.com/

Otherwise...

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the
MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected
machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.

2a. WinXP => Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan (only!)
in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

2b. Vista or Win7=> Run this scan instead:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm

3. Now run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting requested logs
in an appropriate forum, not here.

Checking for/Help with Hijackware:

http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/tshoot.html
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/Malware_Defence.htm

**Chances are you will need to seek expert assistance in
http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachi...php?board=10.0,
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/viewforum.php?f=5,
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/cleanup,
http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php,
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30 or other appropriate forums.**

If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Since my last posting, I think I fixed my issue. Time will tell if it stays
fixed.

First, I located my WindowsUpdate.Log file in C:\WINDOWS. I opened it with
Notepad, went to the bottom, and starting looking from the bottom up, for
most recent info.

I found error code "0x80004002" and info Using that code, I found web site
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/956708. I used "Method 1" to
re-register my Windows Update Files.

I have XP, so I went to Start-All Programs-Windows Update (found at the
upper-most part of my program list). I was then able to get to the update
web site, and all worked well. Note: if you manually initiate updates (once
Windows scans your PC and finds needed updates), you may get back a window
that says the updates were not installed. This is because your Automatic
Updates are also downloading the updates. Look for your yellow "Updating"
icon in your system tray.

I have also this problem. I think that is due to the new buggy activex
provided by microsoft on windows update.

I have almost 100 with WIndows XP pro and I have tried this in 3., all with
the same issue. One of them was a fresh install, error on Windows Update
after SP3 applied.

Please correct urgently the BUG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

- Microsoft Update does not work (buggy activex);
- Windows Update works!
