"Windows is downloading updates"

I have been using Vista Ultimate for several months. Today I see a new
icon.

It is a small light blue parallelogram encircled by a yellow arrow
(swoosh?) down at the lower right (Taskbar?).

When I "mouse over" this icon the words "Windows is downloading
updates (17% complete)" appears in a pop-up box.

Left clicking or right clicking on this icon only turns off the pop-up
box (no options are offered and no other action occurs) and the icon
remains.

How do I determine what is being downloaded here? The % complete is
going up about 1% every 20 minutes or so (dialup). Must be something
big and important?

Just curious, thanks,

Robin

It's doing what it's saying it's doing, downloading updates (to Vista).

That sounds like the correct icon for Windows Update. If you want to control
updates manually, go to the Start orb and type "Windows Update" and press
Enter.

i could be wrong but this sounds like i could be a worm/ad ware or
similar
it sound similar to the 1 my mum had not so long ago (cant quite
remember what it was called) and the only way to remove it was to run
smitfraudfix however i do believe that this program is not supported on
vista.... although i could be wrong

i wouldn't worry too much as it will just most likely sit there making
you panic so as to go buy a fake scanner to remove it but in turn it
will apply more junk fake malware to your system

to help us fully understand your problem it would be great if you could
state any other alerts it might give you

in the mean time you could try running spybot search and destroy,
ccleaner and try the following link
'Smitfraud/Rogue Antispyware Removal for Vista users - CastleCopsWiki'

there is also ad-aware SE but it is now no longer supported by lavasoft
