Hi Neil,
Most transfer or migration software as far as I know are only designed to
help you move data from one machine to another and as such are generally a
waste of money. The applications themselves should be physically reinstalled
on your new machine, particularly when you are using different operating
systems. Be aware that some applications might not work on both machines -
you will need to obtain updates from the makers website for these. If you are
able to install your applications on your new machine then there is a better
way to transfer your data across. This method will leave your data intact on
your old machine so if there is a problem you haven't lost all your data. On
your old machine simply save your data files to a recordable CD or DVD or USB
flash memory device or, if you have one, to an external hard drive
(recommendede). Don't manually copy the data over, however. Access the data
from your applications using the Open option from the file menu and save it
to one or more of the above devices using the Save As option from the same
menu. You can then use these to transfer the data over. Again, don't
manually transfer the data over - instead access the data from your
applications using the Open option from the file menu and save it to your new
PC using the Save As option from the same menu. If you are using the hard
drive method then why don't you leave the data on there? That way, you can
access the data from both machines if you swap the data cables across.
