Hi
Firstly, I am sorry about the large post, but I thought it would b
best if I gave you all the info and troubleshooting to date first
Anyway, here's the problem
For the last week or so, I have been getting the 80070005 error whe
trying to update windows. Also, some other programs are failing t
install or update, but not all
If I leave the computer switched on, eventually the Windows Update Ico
will appear in the notify tray, and if you hover the mouse over it, i
says "New updates are available". When you click on it to get the updat
window on screen, the status is "No new updates are available for you
computer". Clicking on 'Check for updates' gives the 80070005 erro
immediately
Windows Defender also fails with the same error number when I try a
auto update, but if I download the update and manually run it, Defende
updates fine
I checked the WindowsUpdate.log and it appears to have started on 19t
Feb - I can't think of any particular reason for that date
I also have another problem, which I think may be related. My networ
icon dissappeared from the notify tray about the same time. (I have als
tried loads of fixes for that as well) But I still have interne
connectivity
I have hunted around looking for fixes, and tried all I could find, bu
I still get the error, so - if anyone has/had the same problems as me
and knows of a fix, please could you help

Rebooted and rechecked Windows update after every change

I now have NO history for Windows Update, so I don't know what has, o
hasn't been updated, or what the last installed KB was

Below is all possibilities. Try and see which will fix your issue

0x80070005 - Permissions issue. You can reset registry and file ACLs to
their Default state by following the directions here:
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archi...04/739820.aspx

or

How to reset security settings back to the defaults
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313222

Suggestion from MS -

Install/reinstall Windows Update Client

x86-based versions of Windows - download the WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe
package now.
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237

Please see if installing the 3.0 client resolves the problem.

If you require more information:

A new version of the Windows Update Agent is available
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946928

Another thing you can try is resetting the security settings back to the
defaults:

How to reset security settings back to the defaults
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313222

Error message when you try to install WinXP SP3: "Access is denied" or
“Service Pack installation did not complete”
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377

[Possible fix:
http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/re...n-windows-xp/]

WinXP SP3 - Read all prerequisites for a successful installation
http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldron...tallation.aspx

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3) and *only until* 14 Apr-09.
Go to http://support.microsoft.com/oas/def...spx?gprid=1173 | select
"Windows XP" then select "Windows XP Service Pack 3"

Yes I read your post and answered. 32 or 64 bit makes no difference for this error
