Does anyone know when Microsoft will be unlocking something higher than 5.9
to differentiate between computers using Windows Experience Indicator?

Actually, all I've heard and read is nothing more than pure
speculation. I've yet to see anyone post credible reports that can be
backed up that Microsoft is even considering doing this.

I'll believe it when I see it.

From Microsoft...
"Over time, as systems become more advanced, we expect to introduce higher
levels of 6 and beyond. This will be done approximately every 12-18 months,
as new innovations in hardware become available. When new base scores are
introduced, existing scores will not change (i.e. a PC with a base scored of
2.2 today will score a 2.2 in the new updated index, unless its components
are upgraded).

I am, both by choice and by my very nature, a skeptical person. Can you
post the link on Microsoft's site where that text was quoted from?

Not from MS but from...
http://news.softpedia.com/news/Windo...re-41047.shtml
The quote (below) appears on that page.

Peter,

I read the article. Interesting reading, but still no official word
from Microsoft. Systems in the 5.0+ rating seem to be the best for Vista
from an overall prospective. My rig comes in at a 5.5, with my lowest
rating in memory. I have 4 X 1 GB DDR2-800 installed, but I think my bus
speed is holding me back. No bios setting for bus or clock speed .
I guess I'll have to live with the 5.5 for the time being.

The article that Jay linked includes the exact quote below from Nick White,
Microsoft Product Manager. As well, there are quite a few articles on WEI on
microsoft.com. While I didn't see an exact match to the quote used in the
thread (probably because I didn't look long enough, you can if you like), I
did find the following items from Microsoft:

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...a780a1033.mspx

Fourth paragraph. Not an exact quote, but does state that higher scores
will be introduced.

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/win...420d61033.mspx

Third paragraph of the “Understanding the Windows Experience Index” section.
Still doesn’t provide “how often” but does state “levels of 6 and beyond.”

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/win...851991033.mspx

Fourth paragraph of the “What’s in a number?” section of this article still
doesn’t have an exact quote, but does give the “12 to 18” month” timeframe,
but that is only to a maximum of 6.9. The continuation of the index moving
higher is not specifically anticipated by number of months in this article.

Got it, thanks. It makes interesting reading. I'd love to see the
hardware out there that warrants a score above the current max of 5.9...

I have an Intel Q6600, 4Gb DDR2 800Mhz, 512Mb 8800GTS, 500Gb 7200rpm SATA2
Western Digital Hard drive, Gigabyte P35-DS4 motherboard and I have 5.9 for
all scores at stock speeds.
