I updated windows xp media edition to kb927779, kb931836, kb918118, kb926436,
kb927802 using auto-update, and now IE 7 cannot connect or display any web
pages at all. Netscape connects just fine.

I had the same problem. IE7 (7.0.5730.11) refused to connect to any site, but
diagnostics for the connection said everything was fine, borne out by the
fact that Firefox could still connect to the same wireless router.

I restored to a previous restore point and IE started working fine again.
Downloaded the updates again and IE7 refused to connect.

I then used Control Panel Add/Remove programs to try and uninstall KB928090.
I then got a warning that a whole host of security updates might not work if
I uninstall this particular "Cumulative Security Update for IE7 for XP". I
uninstalled anyway and guess what, IE7 now connects again.

My worries now are that I may have disabled some of the other security
updates. as well as this one.

If anyone knows what this security has done to stop it connecting and how to
resolve it, please post here. There is nothing in the knowledge base that I
can find.

Experiencing the same problem here with update KB928090. Computer will not
connect and eventually displays error message. When I unistall update, then
computer works fine again. I captured a screenshot of the problem and the
error that pops up. Can not send error to Microsoft because it will not
connect while problem is occurring. Using HP Pavilion XP SP2 with IE7 and
Norton Internet Security. Click link below to see problem.

I experienced an identical issue on 2/15/07 with IE7 unable to connect
immediately after a Windows Update, whereas it worked fine before the update.

Uninstalling security updates just so IE7 will work is not a good idea IMHO.
While other solutions might work for some people (disabling certain add-ons,
etc.), the best solution for me was to uninstall IE7 which automatically
restores IE6. Today, Windows Update installed some new security and
maintenance updates and IE6 is still connecting just fine. Microsoft may not
admit it but I strongly believe that IE7 has some compatiblility issues with
XP even though some XP users are not experiencing these IE7 connection
problems (IE7 seems to work OK with Vista).

Assuming you have XP, my suggestion is to uninstall IE7, revert to IE6, and
let Windows Update install ALL security updates.

I have had similar problem with KB928090 - Norton Internet Secirity is
repeatedly warning about connecting to DNS Server, allow and message pops up
again, block and can't load page.

Thanks Chloe. That seemed to fix it. I am using an HP Pavilion DV9009 laptop.

Perhaps the onus is on Microsoft to come up with a better update?

Hmm... interesting. My problem is also on an HP Pavilion laptop. Do MS
techies lurk here for issues?

<title>MS07-016: Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer </title>
http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=928090

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms07-016.mspx

So, which version of IE do you have and which version of iexplore.exe
would that update have installed?

[-] Security Update Information shows:

for XPsp2's integrated browser

Iexplore.exe 7.0.6000.16414 09-Jan-2007 02:08 623,616

for IE7

Iexplore.exe 7.0.6000.16414 09-Jan-2007 02:08 623,616

Etc.

Because your firewall is blocking outbound connection requests
from a new as yet untrusted program?

> When I unistall update, then computer works fine again.

Because that restored the version of iexplore.exe that your firewall
is more comfortable with?

Symantec Service Framework crash? Ask them?

Hint: if your firewall can be made to think that the new version
of iexplore.exe is acceptable to it then perhaps you wouldn't
have either symptom.

Meanwhile disable or uninstall that firewall and enable
the XP firewall instead. Then reinstall the update.

Good luck

Robert. Sorry for the delayed reply but I decided to hold off on installing
that update for awhile. I thought it might have something to do with my
firewall from Norton. I installed the update again today ( 02/27/07 ) and now
it works fine. My guess is norton updated the firewall rules as the firewall
in norton internet security 2007 is mainly automatically configured for
computer dummies like me lol. Anyway I just wanted to thank you for your
reply.
