I have recently done a clean insall of vista on my newly built quad core pc
and everything was fine until i tried to access the the files i wanted to
transfer from my old xp machine. I i started by placing all the files i
wanted from my old mostly music pictures and the odd video file such as the
kids birthday party vids however when i access the usb drive on wich i placed
these files i am promtly informed windows explorer has crashed and needs to
be restarted and the following error details are given

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: explorer.exe
Application Version: 6.0.6000.16386
Application Timestamp: 4549b091

Exception Code: c0000374

Additional Information 4: 0ba2a8dc9246864ccb708f87f54a8a69

how can i rectify this as no online solution is given and the usb drive runs
fine on other xp or lower systems and the drive is a maxtor diamond max in a
caddy to allow connection via usb. Any constructive advice would be helpful
as i do have a little faith that once the bugs are ironed out vista like xp
will become a very capable OS please do not reply if all you are going to do
is whinge and say rubbish about changing my os.

Have you applied all updates to Vista since doing the clean install?
Especially, these two updates first;

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=938194
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=938979

After you've installed those updates and the problem continues,
try this update below. You'll have to go here and request the update.
Be sure to put in the correct KB article number. They will email you a
link to download the hotfix, and a password to open the file.
https://support.microsoft.com/contac...1410&WS=hotfix
Contact Us: Hotfix Request Web Submission Form

The update you will be requesting;
KB Article Number 936003
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;936003
Microsoft has released a cumulative update rollup for Windows Vista. This rollup helps
establish a quality baseline for the USB core components on the Windows Vista operating system.
This rollup supersedes previously-released USB fixes and contains additional high-applicability
USB fixes.

Just to be clear- did you look to see if those first two updates
I mentioned had been installed?
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=938194
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=938979

Those folks at the Hotfix Submission are quick about
replying, 1 to 2 hours at the most.

Let us know what happens.

i ran the hotfix this morning after recieving it overnight and it has not
resolved the issue but i appear to have narrowed the problem to zip or
compressed files as i decided to move the data using usb key which is very
labourious however as i was transfering some data all was going fine until i
tried to transfer a batch of files containg zipped folders my default program
for these files is zipgenius which i have on vista aswell could it be an
issue with zipped folders or zipgenius that is the likely problem

Glad you've gotten things sorted out, and happy that I
helped some.

WinRAR does have trial version, and I think even after the trial period
is up, you can still use it but have to put up with a nag screen.

It's what I use for any compression or unpacking needs I have.
If it's possible for you, I would highly recommend buying it.

There's also 7-zip, I've heard good feedback about it.
Of course, it doesn't do rar files.
http://www.7-zip.org/

Eric, I don't mean come across as rude- but, when asking
questions in a forum like this, you might receive more help
if you used some capital letters and periods.
Just making a suggestion.

Take care,

Michael
