Windows Explorer crashes when moving files

I'm trying to move files by dragging a folder from the right-hand pane in
Windows Explorer (Vista Business) to a different folder in the left-hand
'Folders' pane and every time I try this, Explorer stops working and
re-starts. If I copy and paste the folders it doesn't seem to cause this
problem, although even then, I have to [right click and 'Paste'] twice in the
new folder - the first 'Paste' instruction never produces any effect. Should
I be able to drag them? Why does 'Paste' require two attempts every time?

OK, in Event Viewer/Windows Logs/Application I can see each occurrence of
this crash, and it says this: Event 1000, Application Error Faulting
application Explorer.EXE, version 6.0.6002.18005, time stamp 0x49e01da5,
faulting module SHELL32.dll, version 6.0.6002.18005, time stamp 0x49e037ec,
exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x002d2c67, process id 0x2530,
application start time 0x01ca74fd96d5c285.

Under 'More Information:' there is a link to the Event Log Online Help -
when I follow that link to the relevant web page it says:

Product: Windows Operating System
Event ID: 1000
Source: Application Error
Version: 5.2
Symbolic Name: ER_USERCRASH_LOG
Message: Faulting application %1, version %2, faulting module %3, version
%4, fault address 0x%5.

then (in addition to some general stuff about how MS responds to errors
reported by customers) there are over a hundred links to KB articles, but
none seems relevant to this particular problem. (Most of them seem related to
older operating systems).

What can I try next (other than wait till a future upgrade fixes it)?

I would try this, in hopes that it won't trigger the bug (or a possible
procedural error on your part):

Open a second instance of Windows Explorer.

In one instance, open the destination folder where you want the source
folder to go so that its contents are shown in the right-hand pane; scroll
so that there's a large blank area visible.

In the other instance, open the source folder's parent so that the source
folder's icon is visible in the right-hand pane.

Click on the source folder's icon in its pane and drag it to the blank area
of the other pane. Be careful not to drop it on a folder icon there.

I was having almost the same problem. When I entered to my Program Files
folder, as soon as I started scrolling with my mouse, Windows Explorer
crashed.

It is very common that this error is caused by 3rd party shell
extensions that are not working properly. This 3rd party shell
extensions create the options you see on the menu when you right-click a
folder using Windows Explorer. To know if this is what's causing Windows
Explorer to crash and restart this is what you should do.

Download this app that will allow you to view and disable shell
extensions; it's free: 'ShellExView Freeware download and review - view
and disable shell extensions from SnapFiles'

Once you have downloaded it and executed it, it will show you all shell
extensions installed on your computer. You will now have to look up the
Microsoft column to sort them out. When the shell extensions are sorted,
select all the shells that say: No and right-click them and select
"Disable Selected Items" or press F7.

Close the app and try to do what was causing your Windows Explorer to
crash to see if this fixed the problem.

If not, another cause of Windows Explorer crashes can also be
attributed to the existence of viruses or spyware on the machine. You
should run an antivirus or an antispyware to clean any bad ware
installed.

Hope this works out fot you!
