Windows Explorer does not free memory

I am using thumbnail view to look at images in a few folders. Everytime I
switch between the folders, I can see explorer's memory usage go up in task
manager and the memory is never freed. I can switch between the same 2
folders over and over and the memory keeps going up! As I am typing this,
explorer is consuming 914,556K of memory! I tried this with the "do not
cache thumbnails" setting both on and off with the same results. Help!

Is this specifically a MCE problem, or does it also occur with Windows
XP? Which version of MCE are you using?

I can't reproduce any noticeable increase with XP SP2 or MCE2005 - it
fluctuates, but remains fairly consistent.

Do you have any 3'rd party software that may be giving rise to this
increase?

I am noticing this only on my MCE2005 machine; it doesn't happen on my laptop
(Windows XP SP2). The only thing that I am running that I can think of as
having an affect is Norton Internet Security but I couldn't find any info on
any problem like mine after searching. I figured that I'd try posting to the
newsgroups before I start uninstalling my programs one by one to troubleshoot.

When your memory "usage" reaches the amount of real memory you have on the
system does the system start using the swap area on disk? If not then the
previously used memory was being marked as available for use but the OS was
deciding not to re use it until all memory on the system was used for the
first time. If the swap area does get used then I suggest disabling Norton
and seeing if that makes a difference.
