Windows Explorer Error--Blank Desktop

I just upgraded from Windows ME to XP Home Edition. When the computer boots
up I get an error message saying "Windows Exploerer has encountered a problem
and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." My desktop is
blank...no icons, no start menu, no nothing. Can someone please help?
