Windows explorer freeze

Windows explorer freezes whenever a folder containing .avi or other movie
files is opened making it impossible to view these files or the contents of
that folder even when using the open option from windows media player. If
anyone knows how this can be fixed so i can properly organise and view these
files it would be greatly appreciated
