Avast has a scan option for a individual file or folder in the right
click (context) menu. Right click on the blue A ball in the bottom
right corner and click "Program Settings", and make sure they are set
like the screenshot below. When you right click a file or folder you
will see "Scan" with a little blue ball with A in it to the left of it.
