I have an ACER Aspire 5612ZWLMi laptop running Windows Vista Home premium.
Recently, I have noticed that Windows Explorer always crashes when I attempt
to move a files. It then restarts itself and a box appears stating:

"Follow the steps in the Knowledge Base (KB) article to solve the problem
with Windows Vista

This problem was caused by Windows Vista, which was created by Microsoft
Corporation.

Solution

To view details about how to fix this problem, click the link under
Technical information. This link will take you to a Microsoft Support
Knowledge Base (KB) article. Follow the steps in the article to fix your
computer problem.

I have tried several times to install the update after downloading it from
the linked URL - everytime it comes up with an error message: "This update
does not apply to your system".

Any suggestions?

Bob

This implies that you already have the update but are still having problems.
You may either need to wait for Service Pack 1 or contact actual product
support to do further debugging on this. It is likely that they would
suggest retrying with Service Pack 1 when it is available though. =\

Have you installed any shell extensions like perhaps "Total Copy" or
"Copy Handler"?

Perhaps this is what is causing the Explorer crash?

Thanks dzomlija, but I have not to my knowledge installed any shell
extensions. I'm very much a simplebusiness user rather than in-depth computer
enthusiast.

Thanks zachd, I've not yet heard of Service Pack 1 but I presume, as with XP,
it will inevitably arrive eventually and cure all our problems.

If it doesn't, post back up at that point with the fault bucket information
you get:
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#bucket
which should at that time be a different data set.
