All we need to know is the first part of your post:
"I have a HP Pavillion dv2000. it was very slow & always froze up so i
stopped using it."
Your computer is sick. This is verified by "tried to run a hard drive
test but it said 'test status #1- 07 Fail' after about 30 seconds"
Then you put in a whole lot of updates. That probably pushed it over the
edge :-)
As for "i saw somewhere that missing restore points are signs of a
virus". It's not true.
Windows removes old restore points. Other programs also remove some
restore points (they shouldn't!). Finally, you have no idea which
restore points should be there, so you have no idea which ones are
missing (the same would go for me too, of course).
The presence of the CD drive in the boot list is 100% normal. It just
means you can boot from it if you put a bootable CD in there. You might
even be able to fix your computer if you get a bootable repair disk, but
given your level of expertise, you'd do better to have someone else help
you.
But in your shoes, I'd probably just buy a new computer and hope for the
best. Computers can be pretty cheap these days, and the amount of work
needed to get yours squared away would discourage me.
