Windows file explorer (Vista) keeps crashing

Windows explorer keeps crashing... usually when I enter the explore mode,
from the start bar... If I open the computer folder, I am able to access
everything... This affects the opening of control panel and other folders.
The error message states simply: Windows explorer has stopped working and is
searching for a solution... In looking for an answer... no solution has been
found as yet...
I'm running Windows Vista Business Service Pack 1, v.668, & McAffee Security
Centre on a laptop with ample resources.
