Windows Fixes through Updates

From time to time with all the security patches that Windows Updating applies
to my computer OS, the updates corrupt or slow my Office Applications. We're
running Windows XP SP1 and prefer to not upgrade to SP2 for now. Does anyone
know of specific Knowledge Base (KB) fixes/numbers that may have an affect on
application after they've been downloaded from Microsoft's site? Or what
order to download necessary fixes manually or to uninstall?
