Windows freezes at security update installation

The PC is set to automatically download and instal security updates and has
done so with no problem for years. However, I see a post suggesting this is
foolish, but I haven't enough knowledge .

Now, it downloads the files satisfactorily, but freezes completely every
time it starts to install them (no screen or cursor movement and no sound of
hard disc activity/no hard disc icon light). As Updates are now building up,
this means the PC freezes after every start.

The temporay cure has been to turn off Automatic Updates in the Security
Center. The PC then works satisfactorily, but I know doing this exposes my
computer to viruses etc!

The problem seemed to start when the PC tried to install the last of several
updates, a Security Update for CAPICOM (KB931906), and froze. However, this
update is now installed, although any attempt to install subsequent update
packages freezes the machine.

I can't find any solution in the Knowledge Base (all cases seem to use an
Error Code, but I can't get one as the PC freezes, presumably before it can
be displayed).

I use Windows XP, AVG Free 8, and Adware Free 2008.

All ideas gratefully received.

Hi Davy;
Those updates which are not getting installed will generate the details in
event logs so can you post the error details you see in event logs.
thanks
