Windows Freezes at update Attempt

background
Running WinXP pro on a vanilla flavored Dell P4 system.
I manually perform windows critcal updates when available.
I have not updated XP pac 2. To date, no problems with
updating.

problem
this eve I noted a critical update release from MS, went
to the Win update site, and was informed the site had
changed - now v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5consumer
etc., - the site has indeed changed, lots of auto-upload
push. Nonetheless, upon selecting custom install on the
Welcome update your computer page, there is a shift to a
green segmented fuel meter progess bar, and within a
fraction of a second a total freeze up of the system - no
mouse, no keyboard response (so no ctrl-alt-del) - nada,
zilch, zippo. Phwooooo...hard reboot restores system,
but repeated attempts are head-banging-brick-futile.
Something seems to have changed in the nature of MS
update, and it is seriously awry. I would like to know
how I may check the readiness of my system for "new" MS
updates.
kind regards, Bruce

Hi

You could try the steps in this post to try to get WU to work:
