If you go to
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download

and within one of the folders contains the Window Genuine Advantage
(KB892130) update set up. I ran my installation from here after it failed
during Windows update.

The problem why the installation failed was my registry could not be updated
(ACCESS DENIED). I tried to shutdown my Zone Alarm, but it didn't work.
I had also verified that I gave full permission for the Window Update to the
Admin Group in the Registry (See installation failure for Window SP1 service
pack).

I've just sent an email to my tech support guy. Hopefully I can hear back
from him soon......

The WGA diagnostic tool has been updated to correct this problem seen by some
customers. Please download and execute it from:

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

After running the tool, please return to Windows Update and try it again.

I had this "ACCESS DENIED" issue on one machine that defied all
current methods of fixing it, I suspected I had to get rid of the
entire thing and could not find a way of doing so in windows.
Eventually I fixed it iusing Your Uninstaller 2004 to remove WGA
completely - its a pretty good uninstaller and removes all the M$
hidden stuff - once out I did a manual install of the latest WGA and
all was fine.

Nobody was more surprised than me when this actually worked 8-) but in
hindsight something if was corrupted in the original version when the
new version was trying to install it would fail + restoring would only
restore the corrupt version I had in the first place (which was
working OK last month). Re-installing the whole thing fixed the
problem.

Its not a free app but I think there is a 21 day trial.

Another thing which will cause the Windows Genuine Advantage
Validation tool to fail to install is double-NAT, i.e., connecting
to the Internet through a NAT router which is, itself, connected
to the Internet through another NAT router.

My main LAN is on 10.0.0.* and it connects to the Internet
through a a Linux machine which does Network Address
Translation (NAT) and connects to the Internet with a
cablemodem. In addition, I have a Wi-Fi router plugged into
my main LAN, and it also does NAT, serving up addresses
in the 192.168.1.* range.

Everything seems to work fine except for the Windows
Genuine Advantage Validation tool, which won't install if
the computer is plugged into the Wi-Fi router. If I move
the network cable to the main LAN, the computer will get
a 10.0.0.* address, and the Windows Genuine Advantage
Validation tool will run successfully.

As you might imagine, this was HARD to discover. :-(

Obviously the Windows Genuine Advantage Validation tool is
doing something funky with the internet connection. That's a
bug, IMO, though Microsoft will probably call it a feechur (if
they even acknowledge its existence). But far worse than that
small bug are the facts that users have no warning about this
limitation, and that the error message which it reports ("unable to
be successfully installed") is completely unhelpful (which seems
typical for Microsoft software). If the Genuine Advantage
Validation Tool displayed a proper error message explaining
WHY it failed, and what to do about it, an awful lot of
long-suffering Microsoft customers would be saved an awful
lot of frustration.

Hmmm... I might be wrong about this. I couldn't seem to reproduce
it today.

I ran into another machine with this problem, a couple of days ago.
I was on the phone with Windows XP technical support in India for
2-1/3 hours before they gave up. The following evening I reached
"Brenda" in Canada, and she finally solved it.

First, here's the link to download WGADiag2.exe, which can
sometimes fix this symptom (though not this time). If it reports
that your XP is genuine, then shutdown, restart, and retry installing
KB892130 (Windows Genuine Advantage Validation).

If that doesn't work, try running these registry fixes which she sent
me:
http://www.burtonsys.com/SensLogn.reg
Then reboot and retry the Windows Update. That fixed it for me.

Oops, I left off the link. It is the one that Carey Frisch posted:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

But if that doesn't work, try:

Hey, winvistatips.com admins, please delete my email address from your web pages!

It is extremely rude of you to publish people's email addresses for use by the spammers.
It means that the effort I put into anti-spam measures like this
www(dot)burtonsys(dot)com(slash)email
was wasted. Now my email address is on all the spammer lists, thanks to you.
