I just been asked to install KB905474 and trawled through my windows update
installation records and found this file has been installed on the 26th of
April 2006, 31st of May 2006, 6th of July 2006 and KB 892130 has also been
installed thrice - the first time on the 29th of July 2005! Can someone
throw some light on these multiples?
Fred

When you install the most current genuine advantage update, there is a popup
box that says they are planning to do this on a more frequent basis to make
sure that everyone has a non pirated version of Windows XP. Personally, I
have no problem with this because I have all legal versions of Windows. I
think Windows should have the genuine advantage tool be installed before
anyone can do any updates, and that seems to be the route they are going,
I.E. service pack 2.

You need a program to tell you if you're running a genuine copy of
Windows or not? How would you feel if WGA says your copy isn't genuine,
even if you know for sure that it is? Further, if you called MS and they
said, "sorry, our program is perfect and you need to buy a new copy of
Windows", how would you feel?

How is this program a benefit for end users who already know their copy
is genuine?

MS CAN'T require it for security updates unless they want to bring the
Internet down due to the millions of new computers that would be turned
into bots for scammers and spammers.

See
http://blogs.msdn.com/wga/archive/20...-and-more.aspx

A new version of WGAN (1.7.17.0) was released earlier this week. The last
version (1.5.560.0) was released in Nov-06.

As PA Bear stated already, there's a new version of KB905474 out now.
KB905474 aka WGAN (Windows Genuine Advantage Notification) isn't a
static update. There will be new versions of that *optional* update
in the future. That's true for WGAVT (Windows Genuine Advantage
Validation Tool - KB892130) too.

While KB892130 (WGA Validation Tool) is *needed for downloading optional*
updates via the Windows/Microsoft Update site or from MS DownloadCenter
and is almost "only" an ActiveX control integrated into IE, KB905474 is
not. See also the WGA-FAQ
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/dow...displaylang=en
and especially the "What is the Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications
program?" section which tries to explains the differences between WGAVT
and WGAN.

Bye,
Freudi

Thank you all for your explanations, and since I believe I got nothing to
hide, I've installed the "new and improved" for a genuine advantage!
Fred
