I read the other post that apparently answers this problem and it didn't help
at all, so.....Windows update sent an alert saying it had an update for me.
i click on it and it installed, although it never gave the restart the
computer prompt. afterwards, everything froze. i restarted, and now it says
that my copy of windows is not genuine and i may be a victim of piracy and
that i need to "run genuine now", which i click, yes. when windows loads,
it does so slowly, and then finally freezes altogether. people said in the
other thread to get online and try some things on the windows website, but i
can't get online or do anything, period. the computer is completely frozen.
i read somewhere else that nvidia might have something to do with it....i am
running an nvidia card. is there anyone that knows what is going on? or
will i just have to format the harddrive and start over. i had been planning
on doing that anyway, but i'd rather fix this problem first. thank you and
sorry for the length. i'd appreciate any help anyone can give me!

Keep a cool head. Are you able to do a system restore?
In XP: start > help > undo changes with System Restore >
defaulted restore; so Next > select a restore point; Next.
If it won't, it won't - but it's the first thing to try.

well, i guess i could try that when i'm back in front of the computer. like
i said, it completely freezes, even the mouse, so i'm thinking i won't be
able to. is there a way to do a system restore from the set up screen as
it's booting up?

You can do it from Safe Mode.

Alias has your answer: jab F8 to get into Safe Mode at boot before
Windows gets started. It can take some determination. You'll get it.

scotty_uk and everyone else:
the system restore worked, but i had to do it in safe mode at the command
prompt (F8 at bootup)

c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

select a restore point before the genuine software was downloaded.

anybody know what the hell the deal is with the genuine software from
microsoft? it may be silly, but it really ****es me off that someone was
telling me, essentially, that I was a thief. i bought my windowsXP
legitimately and it is "genuine".

anyway, thanks to all of you who chipped in the info!

The WGA Notification update keeps KB905474 but is changed often.
Using System Restore may not continue to be a way to uninstall it.

Being blatantly suspicious of legitimate customers normally
encourages buyers to go to merchants who seem less paranoid.
The seller's theft prevention ought to be hassle-free for the customer.
Maybe Zing could assist the design to get increased dependability:

A view of the fuss can be found on the forums at:
