It's not a 'security of critical update', AFAIK.
MS says it checks to see if XP is " genuine and licensed "

MS is not being deceitful contrary to your beliefs. One can rely on
Automatic Updates and never have to validate with WGA. One can refuse
the WGA Notification 'application', too, depending on AU's settings.
It's NOT required.
As to WGA's worth, only the marketplace will tell in time.
Guilty until proven innocent is not justice.
