Windows Genuine Advantage Update

On Feb. 22, 2007 I installed the WGA KB 905474 and since then I have been
unable to get further updates, they will download but installation always
fails, but no error message is given. The first time I noticed this was with
a recent Defender update and when I checked my update history I found that
every update after 2/22/2007 (the date of my install of KB 905474) had
failed. I am running XP Pro with SP2. I would prefer not to have to do a
System Restore so I would appreciate suggestions that help in resolving this
problem. One thing, for sure, I will never touch a WGA update again and why
the heck can't MS make those WGA updates capable of being uninstalled?

It's called total and complete disregard for their paying customers
which, of course, will eventually come back to bite them in the a$$.

This is a company that assumes that each and every one of their
customers is a thief until they prove otherwise time and time again. So
far, we've had WPA, WGA, WGA/N 1 and WGA/N2.

Hi Prakseda,

I would call Microsoft Support and let them know instead of being quiet
about the problems you are facing. I purchased Windows XP Home Edition
Upgrade CD, a long time back and I haven't had any problems with Updates,
because my installed copy of Windows XP Home Edition, passes muster.

I also have my receipt for the purchase of the operating system.

Do you have your receipt? Always get a receipt and save the receipts.

MS has set up forums to handle Activation issues. STRONGLY suggest you
give them some feedback and let them know about this issue:

Windows XP Genuine Advantage Validation Issues (Windows XP)
http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/...=442&SiteID=25

BTW, the update is known as WGA Notification. Currently it is NOT a
required update and unti it is, it will never reside on my system.

This situation isn't an activation problem as this computer is 14 months old.
It is strictly a problem with that blasted WGA update. Since the WGA update
ran and gave me a clean bill of health, but as I said, now I can't get
further updates to install. It started with Defender and I have since
uninstalled that since it can't be updated anymore.

I went to the Validation sight url that you posted and got a clean bill of
health from that, then I went to the Windows Update sight and tried again to
get the Root Certificates Update but after it downloaded, it again failed to
install. So that was no help. Haven't gotten an answer yet from Support
about the issue yet. Any other ideas?

Ok, now I think I have a handle on part or all of the problem I'm having.
When I click on My Computer and choose Properties, I have the original PID
showing, but when I use the MGADiagnostic Tool the PID is slightly different,
why I don't know. I tried to request Support with a paid request for email
help but the sending of computer info give me an application error and goes
nowhere. SO now the question is, why do I have 2 PID's and how do I get it
corrected to the original PID that I got with my Dell Computer and enable me
to get updates again? And what the heck would change the PID when I have not
re-installed Windows XP at any time on this machine.

If you want to get rid of WGAN, an uninstaller is available:
http://patch-info.de/WinXP/Downloads...ninstaller.exe
Another way to get rid of WGAN is to reinstall Windows XP.

The system IS having issues with the latest WGA Notification
application. It's not having a Validation issue. So, suggest you post
here to 'express' your sentiment and describe the updating issue so that
MS is aware of it:

Feedback and Comments.
http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/...1003&SiteID=25

At this point in time I can only theorize as to what the issue is since
I refuse to install it.
Have posted here so that MS is aware of this issue as it appears that
they are NOT:
http://forums.microsoft.com/genuine/...7380&siteid=25

But, I started in Feedback and Comments Forum and saw this thread -
XP Update problem
http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/...0004&SiteID=25

To start off, that's where you should post your issue.
