Windows installation has encountered an error and needs to be restarted.

I have performed a fresh install of XP and now I'm trying to upgrade it to
Vista Ultimate. After I enter the product key it states "Windows
installation has encountered an error and needs to be restarted."

Any suggestions on how to get past this error?
